Argentina beat Angola 2-0 in Salerno last night, their goals coming from Maximiliano Rodríguez and the captain Juan Pablo Sorín (right). Equally significantly Gabriel Heinze stepped up his recovery from a cruciate ligament injury by featuring for 68 minutes, with Lionel Messi also coming off the bench for the final 22 minutes as he made his own return after failing to appear for Barcelona since the Champions League home game against Chelsea in March.
West Brom's goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak (right) conceded an embarrassing goal in Poland's 2-1 defeat against Colombia in Chorzow. Kuszczak, who replaced Liverpool's Jerzy Dudek in the squad, allowed a punt from his opposite number Luis Enrique Martinez to go over his head and in for the eventual winner. Elkin Murillo gave the South Americans the lead before Martinez made it 2-0 although Ireneusz Jelen pulled one back late on. Costa Rica will also contest Group A with Poland, Ecuador and Germany.
World Cup debutants the Ivory Coast drew 1-1 with Chile in a friendly played in France. Aruna Dindane (right) scored for the Elephants after 72 minutes but a minute later, the Ivory Coast's Didier Zokora was sent off for a second yellow card. Chile equalised six minutes later with Humberto Suazo scoring from the penalty spot.
Tunisia beat Belarus 3-0 in Tunis. Hamed Namouchi (right) opened the scoring with a 35th-minute penalty, Toulouse striker Francileudo dos Santos netted in the 48th minute. Tunisia's Karim Hagui was sent off in the 88th, and two minutes later Issam Jomaa sealed the victory.
The Japanese World cup squad suffered a blow Wednesday with the news that defender Makoto Tanaka (right) would miss the World Cup with a thigh injury. Japan officials confirmed the injury to the 30-year-old Tanaka, who did not face Germany in Tuesday's friendly, with the Jubilo Iwata player returning to his homeland for treatment. Japan Coach Zico is expected to call up the FC Tokyo defender Teruyuki Moniwa, 24, as a replacement for Tanaka.
Germany had to come from two down to scrape a draw with Japan in their friendly at the BayArena. Jürgen Klinsmann fielded a strong team, Michael Ballack and Jens Lehmann among them, but they fell behind after a goalless first half. Naohiro Takahara, who plays for Eintracht Frankfurt, scored either side of the hour but late goals from Miroslav Klose and Bastian Schweinsteiger (right) saved the day.
The Czech Republic's all-time leading scorer Jan Koller started his first international match since injuring a knee in September and led them to a 1-0 win over Costa Rica thanks to a header from Vratislav Lokvenc, who came on to replace the 6ft 7in forward with 40 international goals in 67 matches.
Spain's preparations have been hit by an injury to Xabi Alonso (right). The Liverpool midfielder was forced to abandon training yesterday with a leg strain and is awaiting news on the injury, which forced him to miss a six-a-side game. The full-backs Asier Del Horno and Michel Salgado were the others unable to train and Del Horno later had tests on an achilles tendon injury, after which Spain asked for permission to replace him.
The Spanish have also criticised Chelsea for failing to inform them about an injury to Asier del Horno (right) that is likely to end the defender's World Cup hopes. The Chelsea player has suffered a recurrence of an Achilles tendon problem that will put him out of action for around three weeks and Spain have asked FIFA if they can call up another player to take his place.
"We have found out that he was receiving injections in order to play during the last month and that could have contributed to the injury," media quoted Spanish team doctor Genaro Borras as saying on Wednesday. "Chelsea did not tell us about the injury. I'm not saying that they were trying to cover it up.... but they didn't tell us about it and as a result we knew nothing."
